DOE Provides Bed Bug Kits for Schools
Bed bugs are increasingly becoming a problem within residences of all kinds including homes, apartments, hotels, dormitories and shelters throughout the United States. Although, at present, there is no evidence of a major infestation or harborage within NYC school buildings, these tiny insects have been occasionally showing up, mainly on clothing. While bedbugs are not known to be dangerous or transmit disease, their bites, initially painless, later cause large itchy skin welts.

Schools are not an ideal location for bed bugs to reproduce, because they are nocturnal insects that require feeding prior to reproduction; but in the event that bedbugs do show up in our schools, the DOE’s Pest Management Unit is providing a Bed Bug Kit to deal with specimens.

The kit includes: • A Four Step Specimen Collection and Mailing Procedure brochure with photos; • A step by step Protocol to follow if a suspected bed bug is captured; • A sample parent or guardian notification letter; • A Specimen Data Submission Form; • The Department of Health’s bed bug fact sheet, “Stop Bed Bugs Safely” in English and Spanish. Click here to download a PDF with this information. In the event a suspected bed bug is captured, school administrators are to open the kit and follow the enclosed protocol and procedures. If you have any questions please contact the Pest Management Unit at (718) 707-4493, E-mail, Pest Control@schools.nyc.gov, or call 311.

DCAS Issues Summer Energy Conservation and Air Conditioning Guidelines
The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has issued its annual Summer Energy Rules and Air Conditioning Guidelines for 2007, in support of the ambitious energy conservation goals articulated by Mayor Bloomberg in plaNYC. Click here to go to our Custodial Resources page to download the PDF. The City’s air conditioning season officially begins on May 28, 2007, and runs through September 24, 2007. Use of air conditioners prior to this date is unauthorized. The downloadable PDF also includes a list of Summer Energy Saving Tips designed to reduce electricity demand during “Peak Demand” days, and an Energy Conservation Reminder to Employees and Facility Managers to print out, distribute and/or post.

Related Links Expands Its Scope
Our list of Related Links (the last right hand menu bar) has expanded significantly and is now divided into several sections. Facility Management is a list of links to public, private, and non-profit organizations and publications dealing with all aspects of building maintenance and management, ranging from the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the largest and most widely recognized professional association for facility management, to The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), representing manufacturers of more than 90 percent of the air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment installed in North America, which is packed with information and links on HVAC related issues.

Environmentally Friendly Design, Construction and Maintenance features several links to websites involved in the “greening” of school design and construction to preserve the environment, save energy, and keep our schools safe and healthy places for students and teachers to work and learn.

A line to the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO), a comprehensive New York State site on emergency preparedness and disaster management, and the NYC Department of Education/Email webpage, which covers Microsoft Office Outlook and managing your email, are also included on the page.

Certificates of Occupancy Now Available at Custodial Resources
DSF has added a link to the Custodial Resources page that will provide access to Certificates of Occupancy for our buildings. These certificates will be requested by the Department of Buildings' inspectors during the upcoming inspection cycle, set to begin in January. We have also developed instruction manuals detailing the process for accessing this information. These manuals have been posted in the Violations Control Unit public folder in Outlook; the folder is titled “VCU.”
