DSF: WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The Division of School Facilities
The Department of Education’s Division of School Facilities (DSF) is
responsible for the maintenance, repair and safe operation of all facilities
under the jurisdiction of the City’s school system. The Division oversees
approximately 130 million square feet of floor space in over 1,237 separate
sites throughout the five boroughs of the City of New York.
In order to maintain and operate these buildings, the DSF employs approximately
700 mechanics, 931 custodian engineers, 81 building managers and
approximately 300 other employees with administrative or technical expertise in
the fields of facilities management, engineering, environmental health,
administration, accounting, construction, planning, and project management.
We provide expertise in every aspect of building management and maintenance,
with a dedicated corps of Custodian Engineers, handymen, and cleaners assigned
to each school, assisted by a force of roving Skilled Trades mechanics who
tackle complex repair work beyond the scope of the on-site staff. A portion of
our maintenance budget is also allocated to carefully vetted private
contractors. To assure reliability, efficiency and adequacy in all building
maintenance and operations, we track repair work from initiation to completion,
constantly monitoring and assessing quality and cost, through the use of
Passport, a state-of-the-art Computerized Maintenance Management System, as
well as Key Performance Indicators and other metrics.
If you are a school principal, you can now, with your username and password,
review work being done at your school via the Principal’s Facilities Website.
The Division of School Facilities is committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and
orderly physical environment for our children and their teachers.
