Since September 1, 2007, the Division of School Facilities has been in compliance with New York State Education Law 409-I, which was enacted to reduce "exposures of children and school district staff to potentially harmful chemicals and substances used in the cleaning and maintenance of schools." Through DSF's integrated supplier, Strategic Distribution Incorporated (SDI), all Custodian Engineers have been procuring and using environmentally preferred (green) cleaning products. The environmentally friendly green cleaning products found in the SDI catalog are in accordance with the guidelines and specifications issued by New York State's Office of General Services. Additionally, these products must meet the requirements of both Green Seal Environmental Standards GS-37 (general-purpose surface cleaners) and GS-41(hand cleaners/soaps). Through the adoption of these environmental standards, it is DSF's objective to protect the health of school children and staff populations from non-green cleaning chemicals.
