Children learn through 'hands-on' experiences that afford opportunities to observe and discover. Field trips expose students to situations outside of the classroom environment. 'Outside' is not just the neighborhood in which the school is located. It is a conglomeration of many communities, and extends throughout the entire New York City landscape

  • Field trips are provided to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade within the five boroughs of the City of New York. OPT will initiate field trip service for pre-kindergarten students between January 1 and June 30 of each school year, provided car seats are not required.

  • Schools are responsible for fees associated with tolls and parking.

  • School personnel and vendors may log in to the online field trip system to request, cancel, edit, or view transportation services. Click here to log in.

  • Trips cannot be scheduled on dates that are half days for any grade in your region.

  • Please note that trips requiring more than five (5) vehicles may not be scheduled on Fridays due to limited vehicle availability system wide.

  • All requests must be received by the Office of Pupil Transportation at least two weeks before trip date.

  • Please confirm all assigned trips with bus company dispatcher 2 days before scheduled trip.

  • When planning trips, please remember all buses must return to the school no later than 1:30 p.m.

  • OPT will not provide round trip yellow bus service for activities likely to delay return to school past 1:30 p.m. (including sporting events, the Circus, and The Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island).

  • As an alternative to yellow bus field trip service, schools may use public transportation, one-way OPT yellow bus service while making other arrangements for the return trip, or charter a bus for the trip.

  • For those pupils who use buses only for field trips, classroom instruction covering the content of safety drills may be provided as an alternative to formal school bus drills in compliance with Section 3623 of the State Education Department and Revised Section 156.3(h) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. Schools requesting field trips which fall outside the above guidelines may contact Margaret Blackett at least three weeks before the date of the event at MBlackett@schools.nyc.gov to determine if OPT can accommodate their request.
