TRAINING DEPARTMENT

Training is a vital part of our mission to serve more children healthy food choices throughout the New York City Department of Education Public Schools. New SchoolFood employees participate in training programs to help them develop the necessary skills to achieve new heights within our organization. Training workshops offered seasonally present all SchoolFood employees with the opportunity to acquire information and new techniques in order to better service the children of New York City.

New SchoolFood Service Manager Training

New SchoolFood Service Managers entering the Training Program complete an 8-week training process which encapsulates three components: 4-days of Departmental Overview at Headquarters, 10-days of Hands-on Training at one of the 10-Training Sites and 23-days with 2 Field Trainers/District Mentors. Operational Overview workshops are held over the course of the New Managers first year within SchoolFood. Training workshops provided throughout the year cover new initiatives and offer support for all SchoolFood Service Managers. Training Materials are can be viewed via the web, and public folders.

Cooks/Assistant Cook Training

SchoolFood employees promoted to the position of Cook or Assistant Cook need positive reinforcement in order to efficiently take on their new responsibilities with confidence. SchoolFood Training Centers provide an extensive 10-day program for new Cooks. Some topics that employees will cover during training are: Developing new and positive supervisory skills, culinary preparation techniques, incorporating HAACP principles, time management, recordkeeping responsibilities, problem-solving and communication skills. Providing new Cooks and Assistant Cooks with training helps them gain a better understanding of the many SchoolFood Services available. The first 5-days are spent performing hands-on tasks and learning about important terminology such as: HAACP and Offer vs. Serve that must be replicated within the SchoolFood Kitchens across the city. The final day consists of a workshop held at Headquarters. SchoolFood Hourly employees participate in workshops during the course of the school year.
